Lake Jocassee

Jocassee meaning, “Place of the Lost One”

Lake Jocassee is a pristine, deep, 7556 acre clear water lake located in the upstate of South Carolina. The area that is now Lake Jocassee lends itself to the legend of the Indian maiden “Jocassee” who drowned herself in mourning over the death of her lover.

This lake, formed by the Whitewater River, Thompson River, Horsepasture River and the Toxaway River is known for its mostly undeveloped shoreline, views of the Jocassee Gorges Wildlife Management Area, surrounding mountains, and waterfalls that cascade directly into the lake. A variety of fish may be found in the clear, cold water of Lake Jocassee including brown and rainbow trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, native redeye bass and spotted bass, plus numerous species of sunfish. Lake Jocassee holds state records for five species of fish: redeye bass (5lb. 2.5 oz), smallmouth bass (9lb. 7oz), spotted bass (8lb. 2 oz), brown trout (17lb. 9.5 oz) and rainbow trout (11 lb. 5 oz). This lake is a power generation lake and is operated by the Duke Power Company.
